In the bustling landscape of Indian education, where traditional coaching centers once reigned supreme, a digital revolution was quietly brewing. Born from a simple YouTube channel in 2010, Unacademy has transformed into a behemoth in the edtech space, changing how millions of Indians learn. This is the story of how three visionaries turned their passion project into India’s largest learning platform, democratizing education and empowering learners across the nation.

The Spark of Innovation

In 2010, Gaurav Munjal, a student of computer science with a natural interest in teaching, began to upload tutorial videos on YouTube. Little did he know that this humble effort would turn into the seed of an educational empire. Munjal’s channel, initially aimed at helping his peers, quickly gained popularity, and soon it was evident that there was a huge untapped market for accessible, quality education online.

Realizing the potential of their idea, Munjal collaborated with Roman Saini—a doctor-turned-educator—and Hemesh Singh, a technology expert. As the popularity of Unacademy continues to rise, it first started with the competitive examinations of civil services, then for CAT, JEE, NEET, banking exams, and others. All of these enabled Unacademy diversification and bringing a much larger audience into its purview, hence securing its place in the ed-tech market.

The Pandemic Pivot

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic turned out to be a difficult, yet opportune time for Unacademy. With physical classrooms shut, the demand for online education had shot through the roof. Unacademy was well placed to serve this surge, having scaled at breakneck speed while ramping up technology infrastructure to handle the inundation of new users.

Innovation Beyond Courses

Further than just courses, the company went on to create branded content that could build a learning culture. Programs like “Chamomile Tea with Toppers,” a web series on aspirants called “Aspirants,” and “Unacademy Unwind,” a musical program, helped connect with students at a deeper level, hence making learning more relatable and fun.

This growth garnered huge investor interest for Unacademy. As a result, this startup managed to secure over $800 million with multiple rounds of investments from some heavyweight investors including SoftBank, Facebook, and Sequoia India. In 2020, Unacademy’s valuation hit $2 billion and in 2021 it rose to $3.4 billion.
