Introduction:

In a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, a Pune-based startup, Anatomech, is making waves with its innovative approach to physical rehabilitation. Founded in 2020, this trailblazing venture is on a mission to transform the way individuals recover from long-term injuries and manage chronic physical discomfort.

The traditional model of physical therapy, which often requires frequent visits to specialized clinics, can be a significant burden for patients in terms of time, resources, and emotional strain. Recognizing this gap, Divyakshi Kaushik, a BIRAC Social Innovation Fellow with extensive experience in healthcare wearable design, envisioned a solution that would empower patients to take charge of their recovery journey.

Empowering Patients through Smart Wearables

Kaushik’s vision was to enable daily therapy sessions in the comfort of the user’s home, easing the burden on patients and revolutionizing the rehabilitation process. This innovative approach promised to not only improve patient outcomes but also to streamline the healthcare system by reducing the strain on physical therapy clinics and resources.

With a modest grant from the Indian government’s Department of Science and Technology, Anatomech set out to develop a range of smart wearable devices that would redefine the way individuals approach physical rehabilitation. The team understood that for their vision to succeed, they needed to create products that were not only effective but also user-friendly and accessible.

Launching KUE: The First Step in a Journey

In 2021, Anatomech took its first step towards realizing this vision by launching its inaugural product line, KUE. This range featured a variety of static (non-tech) graduated compression products, including socks, arm, and calf sleeves. Designed to provide graded compression, these products aimed to regulate blood flow, relieve fatigue, and mitigate stress to the limbs caused by daily routines, endurance sports, and overall well-being.

The overwhelming response to KUE validated Anatomech’s approach and paved the way for more ambitious projects. The sales of their compression socks, engineered to enhance oxygen delivery and muscle recovery while reducing spasms and cramps in the legs, rose steadily, indicating a strong market demand.

Tackling Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema

While the success of KUE was encouraging, Anatomech had its sights set on a more pressing challenge: breast cancer-related lymphedema. This debilitating condition, often resulting from mastectomy procedures, affects more than 40% of cancer survivors who have undergone surgery and radiation. Characterized by painful swelling and restricted limb mobility, lymphedema significantly impacts the quality of life of those affected.

The urgency of developing a solution for lymphedema was underscored by a startling statistic: India has only 35 certified Lymphedema therapists. This severe shortage of specialized care providers highlighted the critical need for innovative, accessible solutions.

Overcoming Obstacles: The Path to Innovation

Anatomech rose to this challenge by embarking on the development of a revolutionary wearable device specifically designed for individuals suffering from breast cancer-related lymphedema. This bionic wearable, currently in its pilot phase, is integrated with patented actuators that apply sequential and intermittent radial compressive pressures. This innovative approach not only enhances circulation but also reduces chronic swelling and associated discomfort, offering a beacon of hope for cancer survivors who have already endured a challenging recovery journey.

The development of this device, however, was not without its challenges. The Anatomech team had to navigate complex technical hurdles, ensuring the device’s effectiveness and comfort, while also designing a product that could be affordably manufactured while meeting stringent medical standards.

Moreover, as a startup in the highly regulated healthcare industry, Anatomech had to overcome skepticism from potential partners and investors. The team’s perseverance and the strength of their vision, however, helped them push through these obstacles, driven by a steadfast commitment to improving the lives of those in need.

Achievements and Recognition

Anatomech’s innovative approach and potential for impact have not gone unnoticed. The startup has secured funding through government grants from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), GoI, and BIRAC, which has been crucial in fueling their research and development efforts.

The company’s journey has been further supported by its incubation with Venture Center, a technology business incubator focused on science and technology startups, since 2018. This support has been instrumental in providing Anatomech with the resources and mentoring needed to navigate the competitive landscape of healthcare wearables.

In September 2023, Anatomech’s achievements were recognized when the startup was named one of the runners-up at the Pune round of the TiE Women’s Global Pitch Competition, which featured 58 companies started by women. This accolade not only validated their innovative approach but also highlighted the importance of diversity in the tech startup ecosystem.

The Road Ahead: Expanding Horizons

As Anatomech continues to make strides, the startup is not resting on its laurels. They are actively exploring the integration of digital capabilities into their wearable devices, including remote patient monitoring and optimized therapy recommendations. These advancements represent a significant leap forward in home healthcare management, potentially revolutionizing how patients interact with their healthcare providers and manage their conditions.

One of the key areas Anatomech is focusing on is the incorporation of sensors and data analytics into their wearable devices. By tracking limb volume, movement, and other relevant metrics, the devices can provide real-time feedback to patients and their healthcare providers. This data can then be analyzed using machine learning algorithms to identify patterns and trends, enabling personalized therapy recommendations and insights that can significantly improve patient outcomes and streamline the rehabilitation process.

Moreover, Anatomech is exploring partnerships with healthcare providers, insurance companies, and patient advocacy groups. By collaborating with these stakeholders, the startup aims to ensure that their products reach the people who need them most and that they are seamlessly integrated into the healthcare system.

Anatomech’s Impact on the Healthcare Ecosystem

Anatomech’s journey from a small Pune-based startup to a pioneer in wearable rehabilitation technology offers valuable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs and healthcare innovators alike. It underscores the power of identifying and addressing critical gaps in healthcare delivery, the importance of perseverance and adaptability, and the potential for technology to democratize healthcare access.

By developing affordable, accessible solutions for complex medical conditions, startups like Anatomech are paving the way for a future where quality healthcare is not a privilege but a right accessible to all. Their work has the potential to not only improve patient outcomes but also to reduce the strain on healthcare resources and adapt to the evolving healthcare landscape that increasingly values convenience, personalized care, and remote monitoring.

Moreover, Anatomech’s success highlights the importance of diversity and inclusion in the tech startup ecosystem. As a woman-led startup in a male-dominated industry, Anatomech’s achievements serve as an inspiration for other aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly women, to pursue their dreams and make a difference in the world.

Conclusion

As Anatomech continues to innovate and expand, it stands as a shining example of how homegrown Indian startups can make a significant impact on global healthcare challenges, one wearable device at a time. Their story is a testament to the power of vision, determination, and innovation in transforming the healthcare landscape and improving the lives of those in need.

By bridging the gap in physical therapy access and empowering patients through smart wearables, Anatomech is not just creating products but reshaping the entire approach to rehabilitation and recovery. As they continue to tackle complex medical conditions and push the boundaries of what’s possible with wearable technology, Anatomech is poised to make a lasting impact on the healthcare ecosystem and the lives of countless individuals around the world.
