A Silent Menace: The Challenge of Diesel Emissions

Diesel generators are essential in many parts of India, especially in communities disconnected from reliable electricity grids. However, their operation produces a toxic cloud of particulate matter, particularly PM2.5, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. The founders of Chakr Innovation recognized that this silent menace needed urgent attention, especially after Delhi was declared one of the world’s most polluted cities in 2016. They faced a clear challenge: how to capture these harmful particles without affecting the performance of the generators so crucial to everyday life.

The Birth of Chakr Innovation

Chakr Innovation’s journey began with a simple observation during a casual stroll. The founders noticed how a diesel engine used by a sugarcane juice vendor had blackened a nearby wall with soot. This observation sparked a thought: could this pollution be captured and repurposed? Driven by curiosity and a sense of responsibility, the trio began researching and experimenting, leading to the creation of the first prototype of the Chakr Shield on their rooftop.

Overcoming Obstacles: From Idea to Implementation

The transition from concept to reality was not smooth. The team encountered numerous technical challenges, from effectively capturing soot without disrupting the generator’s performance to scaling their prototype for practical use. After countless hours of trial and error, testing on a 25KW diesel generator, they finally succeeded in creating a device capable of capturing up to 90% of particulate matter emissions.

However, capturing soot was only the first step. The next challenge was transforming this captured pollutant into something useful. Through continued innovation, the team developed a method to turn the collected soot into ink, usable across various industries, from printing to textiles. This transformation not only mitigated the environmental impact of diesel generators but also introduced a new, sustainable product to the market.

Since its inception, Chakr Innovation has grown from a small team working in a garage to a leading clean-tech company with over 60 employees and multiple facilities across India. Their flagship product, the Chakr Shield, has been installed in over 90 locations, including extreme environments like the cold temperatures of Leh. Notable clients, including Dell, Tata, and the American Tower Corporation, are utilizing Chakr’s technology to reduce their environmental footprint.

In 2021, Chakr Innovation marked a significant milestone with the release of Chakr Shield 2.0, incorporating catalyst-based technology to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of particulate matter capture. By 2022, the company secured Type Approval for their product line, establishing themselves as pioneers in emission control technology.
